When a person has bipolar disorder, does something set off the mood swings?
Do mood swings just happen or do things, even little things, set it off? Like, if someone was really happy then found out something that bothered them a little and it set them into complete depression, or the feelings just changed without any reason?

It’s both. When the person is about to have an episode they tend to look for reasons that would tick them off
Anything and nothing can change my mood at any time. A comment, a song, or a fleeting thought, can put me into a depression lasting from minutes to days and weeks. If I’m not consciously controlling myself I can fly into a rant over just about anything. Certain types of music and excessive stimulation will often cause manic episodes and anxiety attacks. I’m most always at one extreme or the other. Rarely do I balance out in the middle.
