what happens if i drink alcohol when on medication?

wellbutrin 150xl and lamictal 150 if i have had my second drink this week tonight which was a long island iced tea what are the risks im taking? and if its just one drink not more is it still bad for me? i dont drink everyday maybe once or twice a week aproximatly i want to know before this forms into a habit ,is it truw that it can interfere with my meds effects? since alcohol is a depressant? im on these meds as a treatment plan for me im bipolar 1 and have add too.

1) Alcohol is a Central Nervous System depressant, so it makes you more depressed.
2) It can go against the effects of your meds & unbalance them
3) It can make you suicidal
4) It can make you act out in ways that are bad for you & others
5) It can hurt your liver, trying to detoxify all those meds.
Follow your doctor’s & pharmacist’s orders!
Yes it can alter your meds. and the alcohol can also make yoour bipolar symptoms worse
Ok, wow.. 150mg of Lamictal AND Wellbutrin? How long have you been on both of these meds at the same time? I understand – I am also bipolar – but the Lamictal should be more then enough. You need to research these two medications together.. just a little side advice
As for drinking while on medication, my personal side effects have only been extreme sleepyness. Medically, though, your lamictal stabilized the chemical imbalance in your brain, and the Wellbutrin brings you up (see why I think the two meds together are sketchy?) Then you throw in alcohol, which is a downer, and you can have many problems.. the worst being a heart attack, or something equal to cardiac arrest. Its really not suggested.

Well, with an anti-depressant it can make you feel depressed the next day. That’s what happened to me. I never took lamictal, so I don’t know (from experience) how it works with that drug.
Alcohol amplifies the effects of some meds. In some cases people have ended up killing themselves mixing booze and drugs.
I know with my drugs, alcohol increases the heart rate rapidly. from 70 to above 100 with one can of beer. I forget the name of the condition but if you exert yourself and your drugs cause this side effect you could go to the hospital or die.
No drinking heavy stuff until the risks are understood.
The woman on about being on Wellbutrin and Lamictal at the same time doesn’t know what she’s talking about. It’s perfectly acceptable to be on a mood stablizer and an anti-depressant at the same time. Alcohol does effect both the illness and the functionality of the meds. Talk to you doctor or pharmacist about alcohol and your meds specifically. With Wellbutrin a possible side effect is seizure and the alcohol makes that slightly more likely by further lowering your seizure threshold. I’m on both those meds and have never personally had a problem drinking on them, but that doesn’t make it a good idea, regardless.
When they tell you do not drink while on medication it’s meant to be taken literal.

I take the same medicine and am fine with a couple of drinks. I have found, however, that having food in the tummy is very important when you drink. I’ve cut down my drinking since starting Wellbutrin, but a few once in a while is ok, I was even told that by my doctor.

I noticed when I drank for two weeks straight I began to feel happy. I did things I normally don’t do, like play with my kids,geting school work done, clean up around the house, and I feel open to others. Just recently I began to feel down almost like I was slowly feeling down. Well, at this time it was two weeks I enjoyed drinking everyday enjoyed living what people may say is normal. One day I just felt completedly out of it I didn’t feel like getting up, I called in to work, I wouldn’t get up to take my kids to school, felt worthless, and slept all day. I thought about what could have made shut down like that. I didn’t want to believe it was the alcohol because that gave the energy I had been longing for. Well, one things for sure until I know for certain alcohol wasn’t what caused me to crash I will continue for the sake of a place.
