Mood disorders are problems with a person’s general emotional state being inappropriate to the situation. There are two types: unipolar and bipolar mood disorders. To represent them, we use a visual mood spectrum that ranges from D (major depression) at the bottom to M (mania) at the top. (If you like diagrams, the HTML version of this article, complete with mood spectrum diagrams, is available at http://www.archetypewriting.com/articles/articles_ck/moodOverview.htm.)

Bipolar mood disorder is the new name for what was called manic depressive illness. The new name is used as it better describes the extreme mood swings – from depression and sadness to elation and excitement – that people with this illness experience.

I am suffering from depression and anxiety such a young age in 8th grade and I am wondering if I have bipolar disorder. I have started taking Zoloft 50mg about a week ago for it (with doctor approval), had few withdrawal symptoms, and seem a bit better now. Better, but still a small amount of depression and anxiety. Before that, I was taking Effexor XR 75mg and had many problems with depression and anxiety. We might get my Zolaft dosage up to 75 or 100mg, depending on what my therapist or doctor reccomends.
I feel like I have a social phobia, as I don’t really prefer to go out in public and I have very few friends because of it. I haven’t invited anyone over to my house, other than my good friend who is two years younger than me. He lives in my neighborhood we barely see each other or talk to each other anymore. I feel like I can’t keep any of my friends because of my social anxiety and have never had a girlfriend although I do have an interest in girls like all other boys do.

In some people, more specifically those diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, mood changes are so drastic and severe that those suffering from the disorder often cannot function in the normal world. Once called Manic Depressive Disorder, the disease responsible for these drastic mood swings is now called Bipolar Disorder.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Here is an example of how I feel.
My manic episodes last 3-4 months and my depressive episodes last 3-4 months.
During these long and harsh episodes, day to day I feel an influx of moods.
Like I would be having a manic episode, and some parts of the day its good mania and sometimes its horrible and irritable mania, where i get angry with a burst of energy.
