Young people have mental, emotional, and behavioral problems that are real, painful, and costly. They are sources of stress for children and their families, schools and communities.

The number of young people and their families who are affected by mental, emotional and behavioral disorders is significant. As many as one in five children and adolescents may have a mental health disorder that requires treatment.

Mental health disorders in children and adolescents are caused by biology, environment or a combination. Examples of biological factors are genetics, chemical imbalances and damage to the central nervous system, such as a head injury.

Environmental factors also can affect a childs mental health, including exposure to violence, extreme stress and the loss of an important person. A broad range of services is often necessary to meet the needs of these young people.

The Problems

Below are descriptions of particular mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders that sometimes occur during childhood and adolescence. All can have a serious impact on your childs overall health.

Some are more common than others and seriousness can range from mild to severe. Sometimes, a child may have more than one disorder simultaneously.

Anxiety Disorders

Young people who experience excessive fear, worry or uneasiness may have an anxiety disorder. These disorders are among the most common emotional problems occurring during childhood.

According to one study, as many as 13 of every 100 young people from 9 to 17 years of age have an anxiety disorder. They include:

1.	Phobias, which are unrealistic and overwhelming fears of objects or situations.

2.	Generalized anxiety disorder, which causes children to demonstrate a pattern of excessive, unrealistic worry that cannot be attributed to any recent experience.

3.	Panic disorder, which causes terrifying panic attacks that include symptoms, such as a rapid heartbeat and dizziness.

4.	Obsessive-compulsive disorder, which causes children to become trapped in a pattern of repeated thoughts and behaviors, such as counting or hand washing.

5.	Post-traumatic stress disorder, which causes a pattern of flashbacks and other symptoms. This occurs in children who have experienced a psychologically distressing event, such as abuse, being a victim or witness of violence or exposure to other types of trauma, such as wars or natural disasters.

Severe Depression

Experts agree that severe depression can occur at any age. Two of every 100 children may have major depression and as many as eight of every 100 teens may be affected, as well. This disorder is marked by changes in:

1.	Emotions: Children often feel sad, cry, or feel worthless.

2.	Motivation: Children lose interest in play activities or schoolwork quality declines.

3.	Physical well-being: Children may experience changes in appetite or sleeping patterns and/or may have vague physical complaints.

4.	Thoughts: Children believe they are ugly, unable to do anything right or that the world or life is hopeless.

It also is important to be aware that some children and adolescents with depression may not value their lives, which can put them at risk for suicide.

Bipolar Disorder

Children and adolescents who demonstrate exaggerated mood swings that range from extreme highs (hyperactivity or mania) to extreme lows (depression) may have bipolar disorder (sometimes called manic depression). Periods of moderate mood often occur in between the extreme highs and lows.

During manic phases, children or teens may talk nonstop, need very little sleep and show unusually poor judgment. At the low end of the mood swing, they experience severe depression.

Bipolar mood swings can recur throughout life. Adults with bipolar disorder (about one in 100) often experienced their first symptoms during their teenage years.

Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Young people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are unable to focus their attention and are often impulsive and easily distracted. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder occurs in up to five of every 100 children.

Most kids with this disorder have great difficulty remaining still, taking turns and keeping quiet. Symptoms must be evident in at least two settings, such as home and school, in order for it to be diagnosed.

Learning Disorders

Difficulties that make it harder for kids to receive or express information could be a sign of a learning disorder. Learning disorders can show up as problems with spoken and written language, coordination, attention or self-control.

Conduct Disorder

Young people with conduct disorder usually have little concern for others and repeatedly violate their basic rights and the rules of society. It causes children and adolescents to act out their feelings or impulses in destructive ways.

The offenses these children and adolescents commit often grow more serious over time. Such offenses may include lying, stealing, aggressiveness, truancy, the setting of fires and vandalism. .

Eating Disorders

Children or adolescents who are intensely afraid of gaining weight and do not believe that they are underweight may have eating disorders. These disorders can also be life threatening.

Young people with anorexia nervosa, for example, have difficulty maintaining a minimum healthy body weight. Anorexia affects one in every 100 to 200 adolescent girls and a smaller number of boys.

Youngsters with bulimia nervosa feel compelled to binge (eat huge amounts of food in one sitting). After a binge, in order to prevent weight gain, they rid their bodies of the food by vomiting, abusing laxatives, taking enemas or exercising obsessively. Rates of bulimia vary from one to three of every 100 young people.

Autism

Children with autism, also called autistic disorder, have problems interacting and communicating with others. This disorder appears before the third birthday, causing children to act inappropriately, often repeating behaviors over long periods of time; some children bang their heads and rock, or spin objects.

Symptoms range in intensity from mild to severe. Children with autism may have a very limited awareness of others and are at increased risk for other mental disorders. It affects 10 to 12 of every 10,000 children.

Schizophrenia

Young people with schizophrenia have psychotic periods that may involve hallucinations, withdrawal from others and loss of contact with reality. Other symptoms include delusional or disordered thoughts and an inability to experience pleasure. It occurs in about five of every 1,000 children.

Treatment and Research: Sources of Hope

Now, more than ever, there is hope for young people with mental, emotional and behavioral disorders; most of the symptoms and distress associated with them can be alleviated with timely and appropriate treatment.

Researchers are working to gain new insights that will lead to better treatments and cures for these dysfunctions; innovative studies also are exploring new ways of delivering services to prevent and treat them.

Research efforts are expected to lead to more effective use of existing treatments, so children and their families can live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

I have terrible anxioty, and it goes so far beyond that. I love my mother so so much. She has rasied my sister and I all by herself, since we were very small. And for some reason, I get these thoughts of something bad happening to her. Something that will take her out of my life forever. I hate having these thoughts. I feel like voices are speaking to me sometimes… All at the same time. These voices, and the thought of something bad happening to my mother. All of those thoughts go through my head at the same time, and I get so afraid. I have panic attacks. The last one was August 21st. (my mother’s birthday) I was thinking about if I ever lost her. I hate HATE thinking like that. Sometimes, I want to turn off my mind, so that nothing is going through it. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I know that it isn’t normal. I wish that there was a medicine that I could take to ease my thoughts. To stop the bad thoughts running in my head. Maybe it’s something hereditary? My father is Bipolar 1, and a boarderline schizophrenic. My cousin (from his side of the family), is a schizophrenic. I am so sick of being so afraid, and paranoid all of the time. It has gotten so bad, I think I may have develeped OCD.

For example, crums. If there are crums on the counter, even two. I freak out, and go on a cleaning rampage. I am SO afraid that even those two crums will attract cockroaches. Oh my gosh….. I am terrified of them. I had a panic attack the other month when I saw one. Then I went on a cleaning rampage in my bedroom. Then, there’s the trashcan. I don’t even really open it with my hand anymore, I do it with my foot. And if I touch the trash can (even with a paper towel) I have to wash my hands.. every single time.

Someone, please help me. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I was never like this before.

Thank you.
What kind of doctor? Should I just go to a physciatrist?

I know that that there are other factors involved in mental disorders, but knowing that you could possibly pass it on to your children, would you still choose to have kids? This is just something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately because I would LOVE to have children, but I am afraid that my child might end up with bipolar disorder, and I would feel terrible.

I was adopted from birth, but my biological mother was actually planning on having an abortion with me (mistake) until she met my mother. There are plenty of days when I get so frustrated with dealing with this & I get angry at 1. not being wanted in the first place & 2. not only did she not want me, but she allowed me to come into this world with a chance of me having this condition.

Let me explain- I do NOT think that a mental disorder should stop anyone from having children, that they can’t handle the responsibility, that the gene needs to be stopped because we’re “inferior” or something. I know that people can live a stable, happy life with these conditions. I just personally am not sure I could bring a child into this world knowing I could put another life through what I’ve been through. I personally see this as a sign into looking into adopting a child instead of having one, but I won’t lie, it would make me sad not having my own.

Basically, I’m just interested in everyone’s opinions and personal experiences with this and would like to hear people’s opinions/stories on this matter, not for “right or wrong” just to get the insight of others.

And please be respectful of everyone!!

And does anyone know how likely it is to have a schizophrenic or bipolar child if one has parents or other family members with said mental illnesses?

The question is pretty straightforward, but yeah, my father is schizophrenic, my brother was bipolar (has had a major manic and major depressive episode), and my boyfriend is/was bipolar, on medication, and has had a several manic episodes. His grandfather was also schizophrenic.

To cut to the chase, I was wondering if any of you with similar backgrounds have ever had any children that so far have been mentally healthy. Please help me out. I’m a few weeks pregnant, and while this probably won’t determine my ultimate decision (keeping it vs. abortion), I’m really nervous about this and just want some sort of answer for some sort of security. I’d really appreciate an honest answer — not one from some ‘hole that likes to rag on people in shotty situations.

I just read a post in which a woman with bipolar disorder asked if she should have a child. I know that I’m going to draw a lot of criticism for posting this, but read the rest of this post. First of all, let me say that I have firsthand experience with mental illness. I have depression, anxiety, and ADHD, all of which have genetic components. Because of the fact that these disorders are often hereditary, I have seriously questioned whether it’s a good idea to risk having a child who would have those issues. I can’t help but think that if someone knows that he/she has a hereditary mental illness, he/she should seriously consider whether it’s a good idea to risk having a child who will suffer the way that he/she has suffered. Of course, just because a parent has an illness like depression or bipolar disorder doesn’t mean that the child will necessarily have it, but the risk IS there! Many people focus on their desire to have children rather than the possible issues their children would
face if they had them. However, when you have children, it isn’t just about the parents, anymore. It is (or should be) mainly about the children and their best interests. More people should focus on their prospective children rather than themselves when considering whether to have children.

Today most, thats most gene studies are aimed at cancer and hereditary diseases !
They are not studying how to cure the most common problems at hand ! They think we should keep those people medicated. Well in doing so, those people are unable to lead a full life because they end up at 18 having to fight to get SSI, to afford staying on medication..and then giving up their job or losing their job because they can’t make much money while while on SSI !!!!! Short story their life has been made abnormally difficult as well ! My question is: For all those people that have mental illnesses, does stem cells provide any hope to curing those brain disorders…even to the point it does not become hereditary….. Does stem cells hold any hope at all for those people ?????
People who have ADHD, Schitzephrenia, Mood disorders, Bipolar, etc
Usually the truth of having mental disorders for some people is having high ambitions…. theres a difference in not knowing what your missing out on in and knowing..it’s hurtful ! For most diagnosed and med-treated patients of multiple disorders…they pass them to their children who live through the same thing they did ! In my opinion it is inhumane to not focus on stem cells for curing this ! People think diseases and other things are more important…. This is continuously for the most part hereditary !!

I do currently take several medications:
Seroquel, Topamax, Valium, and Ambien CR. The Ambien was new prescribed by a reg. doc in exchange for trazadone for sleep but trazadone has antidepressant properties as well as sedative ones. I may just have to go back on the trazadone until I see my new pdoc.

I gotta stop asking for help, but I didn’t get too much my last question, and I really need help.

I am Bipolar type 1. I am severely depressed, often (Especially now) suicidal.

I used to self injure but pretty much turned away from that out of laziness and a lack of interest in anything. Including SI.

A few people told me I am schizophrenic as I have chronic hallucinations and convulsions, but others told me that is my sever Bipolar.

So what am I to do? I need to deal with it but I can not tell my parents, or do anything allowing them to know.
Don’t tell me to call a suicide hotline. (Did you know THEY CALL THE COPS ON YOU!)

Can I see a psychiatrist without my parents finding out? Preferably over internet or phone?

How can I quell the hypnagic hallucinations, as well as full awake hallucinations, and chronic nightmares, as well as sleep paralysis.

Hypnagogic hallucinations, if you dont kow are where you have a ‘bad dream’ when you lie down immediately and think you are awake.
How could I go about that confidential of my parents? I am 14.

I used to smoke weed to calm me down but now it just aggravates the hallucinations.
My life means something to me, but only to the extent of my 2 best friends. Otherwise I would be killing myself right now, but if I do, they will also.

But still I have these thoughts.

I cannot confide in an adult who has the power to bring me to a shrink, I have none I can trust ;(.
Now I am feverish, tired (I cannot sleep) sweating, and having trouble breathing. I cannot get deep breaths.

I read that the word loony came from back then when the only source of light was the moon. Light sources at night apparently might have cause bipolar disorder in people. I wonder did it have the same effect on me.
My old parents have set up night-lights in every room since i could remember, and its sometime even bright enough to read at the lightsource. I dont know why exactly but it drives me insane. Its like i want to jump up and run into a wall, and hit myself with something hard. I move around so much in my bed, i can wake people up.
But then, it doesnt have the same effect on my parents…I hvae to sleep in total darkness but since light polution makes the sky light up a bright crimson or pink, i have lots of trouble falling asleep. I usually need to wake up early too. It seems my circadian rhythms are messed up, but my parents fear that if diaster happens at night, they cant get out if its dark. They sleep save, i go to bed insane…
Whats your assessment?

I am 25 years old and don’t like living on ssi + SSDI forever cuz the money is $890 a month and dont like this, I wanna work as a truck driver cuz they make $11 an hour or more and don’t have to depend on disability. I HATE living in a subsidized apartment and living on taxpayers money. I wanna know if I can work as a truck driver even with my mental condition as schizoaffective disorder bipolar type I, taking the Following MEDICATIONS:
-Seroquel 600MG at night,
-Lithium Carbonate 600MG in the morning 900MG at night.

After taking seroquel I CAN NOT stay awake cuz it works like a sleeping pill and causes a lot of drowsiness.
Will my mental condition allow me to drive a truck for long hours and go to truck driving school? thank u!!

Has anyone else made a similiar decision not to have children because they fear of passing on whatever illness they suffer?

I am also scared that if I was to become pregnant and keep the child, I would have to come of my meds which is my life line to staying mentally healthy…has anyone come off meds successfully and stayed healthy in the above situation?

I am also scared I’d suffer post partum depression and do something to harm myself…

The reality is that bipplar is the type of illness that while I do have periods where I’m stable, when I am in a low state I can’t even look after myself let alone another person, especailly someone as vulnerable as a baby that’ll needs its mother’s complete attention, support and love.

I once had a therapist who told me that mood swings and bipolar II are the same thing. I think too many shrinks are just overpaid hacks spouting unscientific garbage.
