Article by Robert Pasquill

Several years ago I read 2 books which introduced me to many fish oil health benefits. One was dealing with the Eskimo people and the good effects of their rich diet of fish. This was my baptism into the world of omega3 fatty acids. I found this material very interesting because at the time I was fighting for my life as a sufferer of cancer. The second book I read was by a Dr Erasmus, who proved conclusively that the right kind of fats do possess healing powers.

Those Eskimo researchers tried out the fatty acid diet of the Eskimo’s upon themselves and were able to monitor the results and thus discover, what would eventually lead to a host of omega3 benefits, which would go beyond heart and joints and would encompass the entire human body.

Because of the modern diet most people are deficient in the essential omega3 fats. Our diet in the west is geared more towards a rancid form of omega 6 with a tinge of omega 9. The truth is omega 3 6 9 are all required for human health. But omega3 is extremely deficient and most of our omega 6 supply, which is also important, lies very much rancid on our supermarket shelves.

Fish oil health benefits include also our command center, the brain. Mental disorders such as bipolar and schizophrenia and ADHD in children are greatly relieved by omega3 fatty acids. Memory, cognitive functions, learning and IQ are all greatly enhanced by our fatty fish friend.

Hoki and Tuna combined together and distilled, accelerates the body’s ability to produce cellular energy, while at the same time boosting our immune system and helping us to produce clear skin and healthy hair. Yes fish oil is actually a beauty supplement, which can also help with inflamed skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne type problems.

Several years ago it was said that sea based oils would be the supplements of the 21st century. This has turned out to be true. What many do not realize is that the purity is also a very important issue. This is no marketing ploy but rather is most important to your realizing the full health benefits of fish oil. Hence check the labeling very carefully and make sure your product has at the very least undergone molecularly distillation.

Young people have mental, emotional, and behavioral problems that are real, painful, and costly. They are sources of stress for children and their families, schools and communities.

The number of young people and their families who are affected by mental, emotional and behavioral disorders is significant. As many as one in five children and adolescents may have a mental health disorder that requires treatment.

Mental health disorders in children and adolescents are caused by biology, environment or a combination. Examples of biological factors are genetics, chemical imbalances and damage to the central nervous system, such as a head injury.

Environmental factors also can affect a childs mental health, including exposure to violence, extreme stress and the loss of an important person. A broad range of services is often necessary to meet the needs of these young people.

The Problems

Below are descriptions of particular mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders that sometimes occur during childhood and adolescence. All can have a serious impact on your childs overall health.

Some are more common than others and seriousness can range from mild to severe. Sometimes, a child may have more than one disorder simultaneously.

Anxiety Disorders

Young people who experience excessive fear, worry or uneasiness may have an anxiety disorder. These disorders are among the most common emotional problems occurring during childhood.

According to one study, as many as 13 of every 100 young people from 9 to 17 years of age have an anxiety disorder. They include:

1.	Phobias, which are unrealistic and overwhelming fears of objects or situations.

2.	Generalized anxiety disorder, which causes children to demonstrate a pattern of excessive, unrealistic worry that cannot be attributed to any recent experience.

3.	Panic disorder, which causes terrifying panic attacks that include symptoms, such as a rapid heartbeat and dizziness.

4.	Obsessive-compulsive disorder, which causes children to become trapped in a pattern of repeated thoughts and behaviors, such as counting or hand washing.

5.	Post-traumatic stress disorder, which causes a pattern of flashbacks and other symptoms. This occurs in children who have experienced a psychologically distressing event, such as abuse, being a victim or witness of violence or exposure to other types of trauma, such as wars or natural disasters.

Severe Depression

Experts agree that severe depression can occur at any age. Two of every 100 children may have major depression and as many as eight of every 100 teens may be affected, as well. This disorder is marked by changes in:

1.	Emotions: Children often feel sad, cry, or feel worthless.

2.	Motivation: Children lose interest in play activities or schoolwork quality declines.

3.	Physical well-being: Children may experience changes in appetite or sleeping patterns and/or may have vague physical complaints.

4.	Thoughts: Children believe they are ugly, unable to do anything right or that the world or life is hopeless.

It also is important to be aware that some children and adolescents with depression may not value their lives, which can put them at risk for suicide.

Bipolar Disorder

Children and adolescents who demonstrate exaggerated mood swings that range from extreme highs (hyperactivity or mania) to extreme lows (depression) may have bipolar disorder (sometimes called manic depression). Periods of moderate mood often occur in between the extreme highs and lows.

During manic phases, children or teens may talk nonstop, need very little sleep and show unusually poor judgment. At the low end of the mood swing, they experience severe depression.

Bipolar mood swings can recur throughout life. Adults with bipolar disorder (about one in 100) often experienced their first symptoms during their teenage years.

Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Young people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are unable to focus their attention and are often impulsive and easily distracted. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder occurs in up to five of every 100 children.

Most kids with this disorder have great difficulty remaining still, taking turns and keeping quiet. Symptoms must be evident in at least two settings, such as home and school, in order for it to be diagnosed.

Learning Disorders

Difficulties that make it harder for kids to receive or express information could be a sign of a learning disorder. Learning disorders can show up as problems with spoken and written language, coordination, attention or self-control.

Conduct Disorder

Young people with conduct disorder usually have little concern for others and repeatedly violate their basic rights and the rules of society. It causes children and adolescents to act out their feelings or impulses in destructive ways.

The offenses these children and adolescents commit often grow more serious over time. Such offenses may include lying, stealing, aggressiveness, truancy, the setting of fires and vandalism. .

Eating Disorders

Children or adolescents who are intensely afraid of gaining weight and do not believe that they are underweight may have eating disorders. These disorders can also be life threatening.

Young people with anorexia nervosa, for example, have difficulty maintaining a minimum healthy body weight. Anorexia affects one in every 100 to 200 adolescent girls and a smaller number of boys.

Youngsters with bulimia nervosa feel compelled to binge (eat huge amounts of food in one sitting). After a binge, in order to prevent weight gain, they rid their bodies of the food by vomiting, abusing laxatives, taking enemas or exercising obsessively. Rates of bulimia vary from one to three of every 100 young people.

Autism

Children with autism, also called autistic disorder, have problems interacting and communicating with others. This disorder appears before the third birthday, causing children to act inappropriately, often repeating behaviors over long periods of time; some children bang their heads and rock, or spin objects.

Symptoms range in intensity from mild to severe. Children with autism may have a very limited awareness of others and are at increased risk for other mental disorders. It affects 10 to 12 of every 10,000 children.

Schizophrenia

Young people with schizophrenia have psychotic periods that may involve hallucinations, withdrawal from others and loss of contact with reality. Other symptoms include delusional or disordered thoughts and an inability to experience pleasure. It occurs in about five of every 1,000 children.

Treatment and Research: Sources of Hope

Now, more than ever, there is hope for young people with mental, emotional and behavioral disorders; most of the symptoms and distress associated with them can be alleviated with timely and appropriate treatment.

Researchers are working to gain new insights that will lead to better treatments and cures for these dysfunctions; innovative studies also are exploring new ways of delivering services to prevent and treat them.

Research efforts are expected to lead to more effective use of existing treatments, so children and their families can live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder, alternating between episodes of depression and mania. It is a mental disorder affecting about six percent of the U.S. population. The average age of bipolar onset is twenty-one.

Bipolar disorder is often triggered by certain physical, environmental, and emotional stressors in life. Therefore, knowing how to anticipate or identify these stressors is critical to controlling and treating this disorder.

In addition to medications, overcoming this debilitating disorder requires rigorous regiment on the part of the patient.

What is your role as a bipolar disorder patient?

See yourself as an Olympic athlete. As such, you have a goal and you train yourself as an athlete with that goal in mind. As a bipolar patient, your goal is to be mentally healthy and stay stable for as long as possible without any serious episodes of depression and mania. If you are an Olympic athlete striving for peak performance, you will have to train yourself everyday to make significant changes in your performance. These changes may take time and you may even resist them at first; but the sooner you make these changes, the greater chance you will achieve the result you desire. Likewise, if you wish to overcome your bipolar disorder, you will have to come up with a plan and start new behaviors for optimum results.

Sleep plays a pivotal role in stabilizing your moods. It is therefore important to keep a regular sleep pattern to regulate your brain chemistry, which is often the culprit of the disorder. Restful sleep not only gives you adequate physical energy, but also enhances the performance of your hormones and neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, patients with bipolar disorder almost always have problems with sleep: in fact, sleep problem is one of the main symptoms of the disorder.

Research has indicated that bipolar disorder patients must structure their sleep patterns as their first line of defense against the onset of another episode of mood swing.

Your sleep pattern can be disrupted by both external and internal factors. The external factors are environmental and stressful events in your life, such as watching the Olympic Games and staying up late for consecutive nights, or going on a long trip. The internal factor is the bipolar disorder itself. However, if you are on medication, the internal factor is more often than not triggered by an external factor, rather than being the cause of the sleep problem.

Sadly, many bipolar patients tend to attribute the cause of their sleep problems to anything or anyone but themselves. Like an Olympic athlete, you must set your goal to recognize what triggers your sleep problems. No one can do that for you! You must always ask yourself: What have I done to trigger my sleep problems? Once, you are aware of the external factors, you must do everything possible to achieve that goal, which is to eliminate those factors that cause your sleep problems. It is important that you write down all possible triggers. Like an athlete, you must start this training process so that you will find the stability you need in order to get on with your life.

Bipolar disorder goes by many names: manic depression, manic-depressive disorder, manic-depressive illness, bipolar mood disorder, and bipolar affective disorder are medical terms for the same condition.

Bipolar disorder affects both men and women. For many people, the first symptoms show up in their early twenties. However, research has shown that the first episode of bipolar disorder is occurring earlier: It often shows up in adolescence, and even children can have the disorder.

Recent research suggests that kids and teens with bipolar disorder don’t always have the same behavioural patterns that adults with bipolar disorder do. For example, kids who have bipolar disorder may experience particularly rapid mood changes and may have some of the other mood-related symptoms listed below, such as irritability and high levels of anxiety. But they may not show other symptoms that are more commonly seen in adults.

Because brain function is involved, the ways people with bipolar disorder think, act, and feel are all affected. This can make it especially difficult for other people to understand their condition. It can be incredibly frustrating if other people act as though someone with bipolar disorder should just “snap out of it,” as if a person who is sick can become well simply by wanting to. Bipolar disorder isn’t a sign of weakness or a character flaw; it’s a serious medical condition that requires treatment, just like any other condition.

A person with bipolar disorder experiences alternating “highs” and “lows”. Both the manic and depressive periods can be brief, from just a few hours to a few days, or longer, lasting up to several weeks or even months. The periods of mania and depression range from person to person — many people may only experience very brief periods of these intense moods, and may not even be aware that they have bipolar disorder.

A manic episode is characterized by extreme happiness, hyperactivity, little need for sleep and racing thoughts, which may lead to rapid speech. A depressive episode is characterized by extreme sadness, a lack of energy or interest in things, an inability to enjoy normally pleasurable activities and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. On average, someone with bipolar disorder may have up to three years of normal mood between episodes of mania or depression.

Bipolar disorder is recurrent, meaning that more than 90% of the individuals who have a single manic episode will go on to experience future episodes. Roughly 70% of manic episodes in bipolar disorder occur immediately before or after a depressive episode. Treatment seeks to reduce the feelings of mania and depression associated with the disorder, and restore balance to the person’s mood.

With treatment, the outlook for bipolar disorder is favourable. Most people respond to a medication and or combination of medications. Approximately 50 percent of people will respond to lithium alone. An additional 20 to 30 percent will respond to another medication or combination of medications. Ten to 20 percent will have chronic (unresolved) mood symptoms despite treatment. Approximately 10 percent of bipolar patients will be very difficult to treat and have frequent episodes with little response to treatment. On average, a person is free of symptoms for about five years between the first and second episodes. As time goes on, the interval between episodes may shorten, especially in cases in which treatment is discontinued too soon. It is estimated that a person with bipolar disorder will have an average of eight to nine mood episodes during his or her lifetime.

However, one thing to be kept in mind is that there should be support from family and friends so that the affected person may feel more optimistic and secure.

To treat your bipolar disorder, you need to see yourself as an Olympic athlete, you need training not just for yourself but also for members of your family. Yes, they need to get involved with your bipolar depression. The reason is that they, too, need to see and recognize the triggers of your bipolar disorder, especially the factors that may disrupt your sleep, thereby triggering your depression or mania episodes.

Train yourself to keep a regular sleep schedule, and they need to see to it that you abide by it.

Anxiety is a common experience of a bipolar patient. Anxiety may be another cause of your sleep disorder. Due to anxiety, you may want to use alcohol, drugs or tranquilizers to overcome your anxiety disorder. These substances may seem like a solution, but they only aggravate the problem. For example, if you use alcohol to make yourself become drowsier in order to fall asleep more easily, the alcohol may also deprive you of a deeper and more restful sleep needed for your bipolar disorder. These substances have side effects, and you need to think long into the future when it comes to what you put in your body.

Because you have bipolar disorder, your brain is different from that of others. Naturally, you may also want to treat your disorder mood swings by eating foods that enhance your energy and elevate your mood. All these years, you may have developed a craving for junk food – what is known as “comfort food.” Your mood swings are often linked to regular fluctuations in your blood sugar level. “Comfort food” offers you little comfort over the long haul. The reason is that junk food, usually loaded with sugar and empty calories, may temporarily fulfill a craving brought on by sudden tiredness and irritability, but they also cause your energy and mood to fluctuate, creating episodes of depression and mania.

Therefore, one of the key factors in treating bipolar disorder is to use food to balance your mood, rather than using food as a quick fix to get you out of a mood swing.

Your neurotransmitters – dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin – regulate your mood. These neurotransmitters are built from amino acids, which enter your body in small amounts. In addition, your body does not naturally make them, and accordingly they need to be obtained from your diet. Studies have shown that one of the most effective ways to control bipolar disorder is through the diet: eating pure protein without carbohydrates; eating complex carbohydrates with no protein. It is important to increase your energy level without affecting your blood sugar level. If you eat properly – avoiding junk food – you may not only regulate your neurotransmitters but also require lower doses of medications, which can mean fewer unpleasant side effects for you.

However, knowing is one thing, while doing is another. The temptation to use food and drink loaded with caffeine and sugar to boost your mood is irresistible to a bipolar patient. That is why you require the discipline and training of an Olympic athlete to help you stay on course, and members of your family should serve as your coach to ensure that you will not deviate from the training schedule. You need their support as well as their firmness to help you persevere in your combat against bipolar disorder.
