Depression is a mental illness that affect your body as a whole. This illness involves the body, mood, and thoughts. Depression is also known as biological depression, clinical depression and major depression. But the meaning for all is same that is feeling sad and depressed for weeks or months on end (not just a passing blue mood), accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, and taking little or no pleasure in things that gave you joy in the past.

Depression is characterized by a number of common symptoms. These include a persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood, and feelings of hopelessness or pessimism. A person who is depressed also often has feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness. They no longer take interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed; this may include things like going out with friends or even sex.

We all have our good days and our bad days, our “up” days and our “down” days but for anyone suffering from it, these off and ons are more serious. The symptoms of bipolar can hurt your job and school work performance, spoil your relationships and upset your daily life. Postnatal depression is estimated to affect 1 in 5 women and is found in all cultural, social and age groups. There are different types of this condition experienced by mothers after birth. There is the ‘Baby Blues’ which usually occurs between the 3rs and 5th day and usually resolve by the 10th day. It is thought to be the response to hormone changes and the stress of giving birth and occurs in up too 70% of wormen.

* Postnatal depression has a gradual onset between the 3rd and 9th month. * Postpartum Psychosis occurs in approximately 1 in 500 births and is uite rare. It seems to be genetically linked and typically occurs after the first baby. It presents as a manic depressive illness and requires urgent psychiatric treatment.
