Not too long ago, researchers identified two genes that determine if someone will come down with bipolar disorder or not. They are the ANK3 and the CACNA1C gene. The next step is to find out why some people get the disease and others don’t.

Scientist have long been looking at the relationships between bipolar disorder and heredity. And it has now become almost impossible to dismiss the idea that genetics play a large role in the disease. For instance, somewhere around four percent of everyone in the country has some degree of bipolar disease.

If you have an uncle or aunt with bipolar disorder, your odds of having it is a little bit greater also. If you have a brother or sister with the illness, your odds of having it increase a bit more. If one parent has it, the odds are higher. And if both parents have bipolar, the odds are higher still. So, for a long time, the evidence has been pointing towards a genetic component to the disease.

Said in another way, we all have the ANK3 and the CACNA1C gene as part of our genetic makeup, but what exactly is it in the genes that actually causes bipolar disorder to be triggered? Furthermore, past studies have revealed that those with manic depression seem to be more at risk for other psychiatric related diseases than does the general population. Are these genes responsible for these other diseases also? So, even though the discovery of these genes are critically significant, the study is by no means near completion.

Currently, researchers have a working theory as to how the two genes, ANK3 and CACNA1C, affect manic depression. The thought is that these two genes are involved in helping to control the flow of calcium ions and sodium into and out of neurons within the brain. The reason that this is important is that nearly all of the brain processes communicate via electrical signals between the cells.

If you have too much calcium and sodium in your body it can possibly cause your cells to go awry. When this happens, it can result in any number of mental problems. And the fact that the two genes mentioned above basically controls the calcium and sodium inputs and outputs gives us a key insight into how they may impact bipolar disorder.

The uncovering of the two genes primarily responsible for bipolar disorder is extremely important. But, even so, it is still only a small piece of the total puzzle. Researchers still have to determine exactly how they cause the disease. After all, we all have the two genes, so why are we not all suffering from bipolar disorder?

In order to trigger bipolar disorder symptoms, is there some additional, as yet undiscovered, factor that has to be present and active in order to cause a disruption of the functioning of these two genes? These are questions that have yet to be answered, but the discovery of these two important genes gives scientists a great starting block to build upon.

I’ve been looking into them because I know my mother has one of the two and I was wondering if it was possible for me to get one of them/how to prevent from getting it. I know she has one or the other because she used to be in a mental hospital after her mental breakdown in her 20s, takes Risperidone (Risperdal) which is prescribed to those with schizophrenia or manic-depressive (bipolar). She has MANY of the symptoms of each, even on her meds, and cannot hold a job (nor does she want to). I’m more inclined to think schizophrenia from the symptoms except she’s only had one (visual, seeing, and physical/touch) hallucination that she’s mentioned to me and that seems to be a big symptom so maybe it’s bipolar. I don’t know.
I was wondering about specific symptoms that would help me know which she has. She doesn’t like to talk about it, but I think I have a right to know because both are thought to be hereditary and genetic so I likely could develop it!

Oh and she said her doctor says it’s a “chemical imbalance in her brain” and that her meds (resperidone) correct that.
She also has HIGH anxiety that she takes xanax for.
She has sooo many of the symptoms of both, i don’t know what to think… I’m so worried i could end up with one of those disorders too

I have been on 2 mood stabalizers, Trileptal and Seroquel, which neither of them helped. Fast forward to today, I went to see someone here in Arizona (a psychiatrist), seeing as I just recently moved here from Florida, and now they are saying I have Borderline Personality Disorder, and that is the reason for my mood swings. I don’t know who to believe, my psychiatrist back in Florida, or my psychiatrist here in Arizona. Has anyone ever had 2 different diagnoses like this?

hello! i was diagnosed as bipolar when i was 12 and about a year ago i was hospitalized after a traumatic event. a doctor i only met with for five minutes told me i wasn’t really bipolar, that i was actually bipolar but you can’t diagnose anyone under 18. so i was just wondering the difference and how you can tell which is appropriate. i mean the most common physch misdiagnosis is mistaking schitzophrenia for manic depression so its possible, at the same time i respond to medication and dont respond to group therapy, instead i get along better with “authority”.

I realize that everyone has their own combination for medication dealing with bipolar as certainly do I. I take my medications and they help me a lot, but even Yaz (a birth control I take), which is said to treat PMDD (something dealing with severe depression while you’re on your menstruation cycle), doesn’t seem to help my mood swings or deep depressions that include wanting to sleep unhealthy amounts of time during my period. I’m not in physical pain, just utter misery. Can anyone verify or help me with this?

What is this classified as, when you have these type of episodes over 5 years

manic-depressive-manic-depressive-manic-depressive
This is how my usual year looks like, for 4 years.

This year:
slightly mixed mania-slightly mixed depression-completely mixed mania and depression-mania and depression changing by the hour or day. One second i have all the symptoms of mania, 3 hours later i am feeling the symptoms of a major depressive episode.

My mania and depression used to last many months, but now fluctuate by the hour, means i am basically going through mania and depression at the same time, but I don’t have MIXED symptoms as in feeling mania with depressive symptoms or a depressive episode with manic symptoms. That used to happen, but now its like when I am manic for that 3 hours, its ONLY manic symptoms.

This is type 2 bipolar right?

Whats more serious 1 or 2?

I DONT take medicine

But I will be this september.
