Looking through the evolution and development of bipolar disorder or also known as manic depression medications, you can say that they’ve changed dramatically but experts are still on the lookout for the best bipolar medication. Currently, bipolar patients are at the same time subjected to varying medications instead of just be given with a single medication that will totally take care of the problem. In the past, lithium has been the best bipolar medication used for patients. This was discovered in 1949 as an effective mediation in taking care of bipolar disorder. Although it’s considered to be the best, it’s still not a standalone medication as other medications should also be included with it to ensure its effectiveness. Apart from lithium, other medications like anticonvulsants are used for treating bipolar disorders. Examples of these are Depakote, Lamictal, tegretol, trileptal and others. The focus of these medications is to manage seizure disorders. Many physicians find them effective for managing a bipolar disorder so it’s been used throughout the years.

The next type of bipolar treatment is the antipsychotics. The main task of these drugs is to stabilize mood as they work directly to the brain and neurotransmitters. They balance the levels of different neurotransmitters to ensure mood stability. The most common antipsychotics in the market are Geodon, Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and clorazil. Typically, this type of drug is considered as the best bipolar medication. While antipsychotics are regarded as the best bipolar medication, antidepressants are considered to be not the most helpful medication for this problem as they can trigger the occurrences of bipolar episodes to patients.

Monitoring is required for patients who are under antidepressants, including maintenance medications like lithium, Lamictal and valproate. It’s essential for the patient to be under these maintenance medications all the time even with the absence of fatal symptoms. In conclusion, you’ll not really find an actual best bipolar treatment for this condition as the effects of medications may vary depending on the patient who’s taking it. However, you can regard a drug as the best bipolar medication as long as it’s able to control the occurrence of episodes and symptoms.

Another name for bipolar disorder is manic depression and it is often debilitating to those that are living with it. This does not include the impact that it has on the people around them that love them. It is important to know that there are two types of bipolar disorders. The first is bipolar disorder I which has moments of euphoria and moments of mania that are then accompanied by feelings of depression. Meaning that there are times when the person feels really good and times that the person feels really bad. Bipolar disorder II has alternating moments of hypomania and depression; this is the less severe of the two types.

The total number of people afflicted with a bipolar disorder is a little over two million, in the U.S. alone and the age range starts as young as 6 years old. With such a disparity in age, anyone can understand why finding a natural way to treat such a severe disorder naturally is important. You don’t want to start your child on a medication that is suppose to help them only to cause them more health problems down the road. The good news is, you don’t have to. There are effective natural treatment options.

True that traditional medicine does not offer a cure for bipolar disorder (manic depression,) because they do not know of one. There are different nutrients that can be added to the diet that have been shown to have a positive impact on people that are suffering with bipolar disorder. Some of those nutrients include coconut butter, fish oils, cod liver oil and alkaline foods. These foods have been shown to help decrease the number of mood swings and improved overall mood. This can be a godsend not only to the person with bipolar disorder but those that love them.

Naturally if there are foods that can help you feel better, then there are foods that you should avoid because they can aggravate your condition. Do your best to avoid any artificial ingredients, opt for organic natural foods whenever possible. Skip foods with refined sugars such as ice cream, soda pop and other tempting desserts. Junk food and alcohol are also known triggers as are bad fats such as transfats found in fried foods.

Keep in mind that foods you eat have an overall impact on your mood and physical body. While it is wonderful to know that by adjusting the food you eat you can live a less manic life and feel better, there are other all natural treatment options available to you. If they are all natural the only side effect there is, is you having a happier healthier life. Isn’t it time that you took a moment to find out more about these options?

Bipolar depression is one term for what’s formally called bipolar disorder, and used to be called manic depressive illness. Most of us have heard of it at some point, and you may be wondering if it’s responsible for your mood swings or difficulties relating to others. You might also be worried about a friend or family member. However, the signs of bipolar disorder also resemble those of several other disorders, so it can be hard to tell on your own. Even mental health personnel can have trouble diagnosing this disorder because it overlaps with so many other illnesses.

About half of people eventually diagnosed as being bipolar see three or more mental health professionals before they get a good diagnosis, with about a third of them receiving their diagnosis more than ten years after looking for treatment. That can make dealing with bipolar depression and manic phases even harder. People who suffer from this disease may be misdiagnosed as and treated for depression, borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia or ADHD.

Since about sixty percent of people suffering from bipolar depression also have a substance abuse issue (usually related, since using drugs or alchohol can relieve the symptoms temporarily, but is not an effective treatment for the problem), their emotional disorder may be overlooked in favor of substance abuse treatment, too. If mania or depression are present without drugs, bipolar disorder is a likely diagnosis.

This means that if you’re a sufferer of bipolar disorder, you may have trouble getting the correct diagnosis and treatment from a doctor or psychologist. This can make the entire process a lot harder. In addition, since drugs are so often used to treat emotional disorders, you may be concerned that getting help means agreeing to be on drugs in the long term. However, if you find the right doctor, it’s easier to get the right diagnosis, and drugs are not a required treatment option. Many people choose to go without them because of their side effects, and instead use non-medication-based treatment methods.

Seeking counseling, working on the structure of your day to day life to make your emotional swings easier to deal with, and learning how to prevent them or reduce their effects are all options. Another method, which is similar to medication in that it seeks to adjust the brain chemistry, but which is often milder and may not have the same side effects, is the use of herbal treatments. Alternative treatments, including acupuncture, are also sometimes used.

While bipolar disorder can be hard to diagnose and even harder to live with, it can be treated, and medication is not the only option. If you suspect that you suffer from bipolar disorder, talk to a doctor or mental health professional to find out what you can do to help yourself. It’s important to do something!

If you have bipolar disorder, you will probably need medication. You may need it for the rest of your life. That can be hard to accept. Some people see medication as a crutch or a weakness; instead they want to get better on their own.

But you have to remember that bipolar disorder is a real medical illness. It’s not something you can cure with willpower. Taking bipolar disorder medication is just like taking medication for high blood pressure or heart disease.Medication can be like a pair of glasses. Bipolar disorder distorts your view of things; medication may allow you to see clearly again.

While your diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder may leave you feeling relieved on one hand because you finally know what is wrong, but more worried on the other, know that you are on the right path. Once your doctor or therapist has diagnosed your disorder, you can gain the knowledge you need to learn to deal with your disorder. Along with suggesting some lifestyle changes, your doctor may start you on a regimen of medicine to help control your symptoms.

There are several medicines available to help Bipolar Disorder, but in order for them to be effective, they must be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes. Here are some of the Bipolar medications your doctor may prescribe. The first medication used to treat Bipolar Disorder, and still prescribed today, is Lithium.

First used in the 1950′s, Lithium was not actually approved for use in Bipolar disorder until the 1970′s. Once your doctor prescribes Lithium, it will probably take about one week to start working and may take up to three weeks before you feel the full benefits. Along with its mood stabilizing abilities, Lithium users may also experience hair loss, thyroid problems and swelling. Your doctor may be able to prescribe medicines to help with the side effects of this Bipolar medicine.

Another type of Bipolar medicine often prescribed to help stabilize moods includes medicines originally formulated as anticonvulsants. These include drugs such as Depakote or Tegretol. Like Lithium, these drugs may also take up to three weeks to completely control your Bipolar symptoms.

Reported side effects include mild stomach cramps, hair loss, and sleepiness or grogginess during the day. The higher your medication dose, the more problems you may have with daytime sleepiness. Users of these medicines often report turning to coffee to help counteract this side effect.

A newer class of drugs now being used to treat the manic phase of Bipolar Disorder is called the psychotropic medicines. There are several drugs in this class that will help reduce chance of experiencing a manic phase and may even bring about a remission in your symptoms. The Bipolar medicine in this class offers a lower risk of weight gain as well as a lower risk of developing diabetes than some other treatments.

One note of caution about most Bipolar medications – they can be very dangerous to pregnant women. If you are a woman who wants to become pregnant or has just become pregnant, tell your doctor. He or she can help you to assess the risks to you and your baby and together you can decide how to progress with your treatment.

There are many types of Bipolar medicine on the market today. While some may produce desirable results in one patient, they may not help another. Some may find the side effects of one medicine intolerable while they do not affect another. Only by working together with your doctor and therapist you can find a medication that best suites you and best controls your symptoms.

How can a teenager be diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder? I mean, wouldn’t you be easily confused with the tendancy young people have to rapidly change moods? Look, I’m almost positive that I’m Bipolar, but my mom thinks it is just regular teenage mood swings. I think it’s too severe for that. I sort of want to be diagnosed as being Bipolar because I want help. I don’t like what happens to me, but I can’t really fight it. If you’d like to know WHY I think I’m bipolar…

-I eat a lot all the time.
-I have trouble waking up.
-I have trouble falling asleep.
-I can become extremely angry in a heartbeat over absolutely nothing. In my anger, I have physically hurt people and damaged my house and my belongings. I can’t really control my anger or stop myself.
-I can feel unexplainably happy or hyper out of no where.
-I can’t really concentrate on one task.
-I often have thoughts about suicide and running away.
-I have trouble talking to others.

That’s all I can name right now, there’s more tho.
K, I’ll add more details since I have more space now, hahah.

-To the few people I don’t have trouble talking to, I can talk and talk and talk and talk and talk.
-I have extremely low self esteem at times, but at other times I feel on top of the world.
-I have experienced trouble because I felt the “need” for risky behaviour.
-Terrible judgement.
-When I do sleep, I’ve been known to sleep for 15+ hours.
-Terrible memory. I’m 15, I shouldn’t have memory problems.
-Can’t concentrate very well. Thoughts are like a can of soda.. Bubbles coming up everywhere.
-I often hate myself.
Elizabeth D- Well, that’s the problem. I’m taking online classes partly because of my problems. I couldn’t wake up in the mornings and I was always late, I had a fear of coming in late, and in general I just feel anxious when I’m around lots of people. I should’ve gone back to regular school this semester but I started CRYING in the counselour’s office for who-knows-why, so she said it’d be in my best interest to take classes online.
o.O I mostly described the lows, yes, since they are the most bothersome. Don’t get me wrong, I can have manymanymany highs as well.

My family is actually renting our house to a bipolar man that I know fairly well. He’s talked about his disorder before, so I know quite a few things about it.
————————
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, I don’t go to that school anymore. Can I just e-mail the counselor and ask if we could talk? I dunno, I just want my mind at rest with what’s happening. I don’t like it.

I prefer answers from people who have taken more than one type of these medications and have found one better than the rest…

I tried Prozac, with fair results and Lexapro, which I found fairly helpful also. I am determined to stay completely off of alcohol from here on out. I realize that everyone responds differently to meds, but I’m wondering what people have found better between the common SSRIs: Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Effexor, and the others. Thanks…

Oh, and I’m NOT considering suicide, just having thoughts of wanting life to be much more than I’ve made it in recent years…

Just curious what seems to work well for people with this disorder and how well it does work?
