Is mental illness hereditary?

Well I was wondering if mental illness is hereditary or if it’s just My Family that has a problem? I have an Aunt, a cousin, and a Brother that have been diagnosed with skytzophrenia and another brother who has the characteristics! I have a Cousin who was diagnosed as bipolar! My Father and my Sister haven’t been diagnosed with anything, but they are definately ill. my Mother’s diagnosis was just Mental Illness! I have two Aunts and a Cousin with multiple personalities. I am agorophobic but thats not where the voices come from!

But you can always ask your doctor, sometimes it depends on the illness. Could be caused from your environment.
Yes, there is an increased incidence of mental illness if your family members have it. You family sounds quite bad, are you being serious? If so, I hope you family is on the proper medication and in therapy. I hope you get over you agorophobia because..it is always nice to go out. Hearing voices may be a symptom of schizophrenia. I hope you are seeing a psychiatrist and if not, go to one soon.
Several mental illnesses you have mentioned are hereditary. It doesn’t mean you’ll get them but your chances are better. Just like alcoholism runs in families. doesn’t mean the child will be one if the parent is. But with your family history don’t mess around. Talk to a psychologist. at least to put your mind at rest if there isn’t a problem. Or he can get you on the right road to recovery. just because you have a illness like this doesn’t mean you can’t live a normal life.
I have worked with families for many years, juveniles and children specifically for 7 years and I can tell you with no doubt at all that mental illness certainly runs in families. I have often wondered if some of the “heredity” though is from learned behavior. Mentally ill people can’t help the way they act sometimes. The problems you describe are certainly worth checking into. Schizophrenia is hereditary. Now would be a good time to get help before you get any worse. Schizophrenia can be managed well with medication; the key is to stay on your medication! Good luck. Nana
Yes mental illness can be hereditary. Even though there is still a lot of conflict over the issue. You will probably get a wide range of answers on this subject. People have mixed feelings and mixed beliefs about lots of mental illnesses, especially if they have never experienced them. There are things still that doctors do not understand about what causes certain illnesses. But if you do the research and ask the doctors, one thing they all agree on is that it can be hereditary.
Also, do not listen to people if they try and tell you mental illness is “all in your head”. It is not, and they are real. But if you have never experienced the problem, it is hard for some to understand. There is help though, hang in there. See a doctor, the voices can stop. Good luck, and God bless.

Yes it is hereditary,my dad was believed to be bipolar,but was never tested and I have Anxiety disorder and depression,my aunt his sister has anxiety disorder and her oldest daughter has depression real bad,she just got out of the hospital for it. I believe I have adhd to.
Well, i thing some aspect of it is , yes. My family runs rampant with ADHD and I also have two autistic sons. I think that by now if you had a more severe case of a mental disorder, it would have raised it head by now. That doesnt mean you are not prone to some aspects such as Generized Anxiety Disorder or OCD ( Obessive Compusive Disorder) You said you suffered from Agorophobia, so that tells me you do have some anxiety issues. Dont let it frighten you tho. Sounds like you may have had a brush with the milder side of it. At least you are aware of symptoms, since you have family members with mental illness, and you can just watch out for them. Just because your family has issues doesnt mean 100% you will to, just take care of yourself and when and if you need help, make sure you make the steps to get it. It takes a strong person to reach out for help when then need it, gl!
