It shouldn’t. Treating an underactive thyroid shouldn’t make a difference in you bipolar treatment.
No. You would probably be prescribed an artificial hormone, like Thyroxine.
The two have no connection. Treatment for under-active thyroid involves replacement of the thyroid hormone your body should be making anyway. It is important that you take your thyroid med daily, usually on an empty stomach or it won’t work as well. It’s possible that thyroid med might help with the depressive side of your bipolar problem, because exhaustion (typical thyroid symptom) can contribute to depression. I don’t know that for a fact, I am not bipolar, but I’ve been on thyroid med for years and so have other members of my family. Work closely with your doctor(s) and make sure anyone who treats you is aware of everything you are taking. Your pharmacist can be a real help here. It’s a good idea if you can to use one pharmacy consistently, so they know what you take and have taken, and any problems you may have had with your meds. Your pharmacist will also be the most up-to-date on drug interactions, which means how medicines work together–or don’t. And definitely don’t discontinue your bipolar meds, if any, without your doctor’s OK.
No, the underactive thyroid was probably caused by the bipolar treatment. Mine was.
There are many folks who say that there bipolar symptoms were GREATLY improved once they adequately treated their hypothyroidism!! The problem is finding a doctor who really understands the role T3 can play in some cases of bi-polar. You need to treat your hypo with desiccated thyroid like Armour, Naturethroid, etc. and dose correctly. There is a page on the website below that is called Things We Have Learned. That teaches you and your doctor how to do it. There is also a page about mental health & the use of desiccated thyroid, including mentions bi-polar. The book has even more info. Hope that helps.
