Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders where the person experiences states or episodes of depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. Left untreated, it is a severely disabling psychiatric condition. The difference between bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder (also called major depression), for the purpose of this introduction, is that bipolar disorder involves “energized” or “activated” mood states in addition to depressed mood states. The duration and intensity of mood states varies widely among people with the illness. Fluctuating from one mood state to another is called “cycling” or having mood swings. Mood swings cause impairment not only in one’s mood, but also in one’s energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms and thinking abilities. Many people become fully disabled, for some period of time, after being diagnosed, and during this time may have great difficulty functioning.

The symptoms are numerous, but if your nephew suffers from depressive moods followed by manic, uncontrollable highs.
He might be suffering from bipolar disorder and needs to see a Psychiatrist, for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Symptoms or behaviors noticed in people who have might be bipolar (type 1 or type2). Type 1 is considered the classic form of the illness–causes recurrent episodes of MANIA (extremely happy or very irritable, very high opinion of him-or-herself, need little or no sleep, talk more than usual, hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating–racing thoughts, act impulsivily or do reckless things, such as go on shopping sprees, drive recklessly, get into foolish business ventures, of have frequent, indiscriminate, or unsafe sex.)and DEPRESSION (sad or anxious for a significant time, feel hopeless or pessimistic, slowed thoughts or speech due to low energy, have difficulty concentrating, remembering, and making decisions, have changes in eating and sleeping habits leading to too much or too little eating and sleeping, decreased interest in usual activities, including sex, have suicidal thoughts.)
How old is this person? What kind of behaviors/symptoms have led you to ask this question? Is there a history of mental compromises/illnesses in the family? Has there been any recent trauma occur in this person’s life recently or even in the past? WebMd.com would be a place to start or bipolar.big. For obvious reasons, as Bipolar Disorder can manifest itself in numerous ways, and most often requires a serious approach by PROFESSIONALS, it is crucial that this person be evaluated as soon as possible. I work with someone with BPD and, if not controlled, the person who suffers with this disorder can be a danger not only to themselves but to others. Also, by chance, is this person artistically inclined? Share your suspicions if possible with the parents and encourage them to get help for your Nephew right NOW!
Blessings!

Bipolar disorder is invented thing. The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is psychiatry’s “billing bible” of so-called mental disorders. With the DSM, psychiatry has taken countless aspects of human behavior and reclassified them as a “mental illness” simply by adding the term “disorder” onto them. While even key DSM contributors admit that there is no scientific/medical validity to the “disorders,” the DSM nonetheless serves as a diagnostic tool, not only for individual treatment, but also for child custody disputes, discrimination cases, court testimony, education and more. As the diagnoses completely lack scientific criteria, anyone can be labeled mentally ill, and subjected to dangerous and life threatening “treatments” based solely on opinion.
The psychiatric approach is to VOTE on diseases. Stealing legitimacy from the medical community, they group symptoms and give them ominous and frightening names. From 1952-94, the DSM grew from 112 disorders/diseases to 374 by VOTING!
Rex Cowdry, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health in 1995 said, “We do not know the causes (of psychiatric disorders). We don’t have methods of curing these illnesses yet.” Norman Sartorius, president of the World Psychiatric Association, said in 1994, “The time when psychiatrists considered that they could cure the mentally ill is gone. In the future, the mentally ill will have to learn to live with their illness.”
Recent media has exposed corruption in those psychiatric researchers who created the DSM IV. USA Today reported in April ’06, “A majority of the medical experts who created the “bible” for diagnosing mental illness have undisclosed financial links to drugmakers”.
So, do you really want to sentence your nephew to psych drugs addiction? If he behaves like a child, it doesn’t mean he has disorder. It means he is just a child. Help him grow up, that’s all. Wishing you best!

PS: Yasmin is 100% wrong. Bipolar disorder is very real. It has had me angry at the world, depressed, suicidal at times, feeling like a failure, unable to hold jobs for very long, unable to establish or maintain personal
relationships. In other words, I hated life and living. I know I am not the only one, many other people report this as well. Now that I am on the correct medications, life is good. From my perspective, people are more friendly and polite and few things make me angry anymore. Yasmin needs to stop putting this bunk out to people trying to improve their lives and not advise people on something she/he knows nothing about. Pray for her/him and her/his ignorance.
