I am 23 years old, have Bipolar disorder (hereditary, my father has it), anxiety/panic disorder, depression/suicidal thoughts. I can’t work, been out of work for a year and half. I am trying to get on disability. The day before yesterday, I overdosed on my Xanax, 0.5mg. I took 24 pills total to try to kill myself. I went to the hospital, they didn’t pump my stomach, but they did run an I.V. with a lot of fluid (not sure what kind it was). I woke up, and my husband said I was unconscious for 11 hours. I was then baker acted for approximately a day and a half, and I am now home.
Has anyone experienced this or is going through mental illness like I am? I would just like to know if I am not alone in this. Thank you in advance for your answers.
I also want to say that this was the first time I ever took pills in excess like this. I used to cut myself as a teenager, when I was 16. I feel grateful for my life right now, that I survived this.

i have all the signs of this, im 16, but no one else in my family has it. i heard it is hereditary? is it something in the brain that you could see on a scan or something or is it just psychological tests and if you have all the symptoms, you must have it? or is there a way doctors can 100% know? thanks
also do you have it from birth? or can you get it when you get older because of bad life experiences?

I have a paper (7-10 pages) that i need to write for a college level general psych class. My problem is that the topic needs to be a question that my partner and i can research and answer ( prove the hypothesis true or false). The only idea I have come up with so far is ” Is Bipolar disorder hereditary?” My major is social work and my partner wants to focus on something in biological psych, so the scoop of topics is pretty wide. If you have any suggestions, I appreciate them. : )

In 2002 I broke up with my high school sweetheart on our prom night. I fell into a horrible depression.
Come 6 years later and 3 doctors diagnose me with bipolar disorder type 1?
WTF, how can i go from depression, which is not hereditary, and it was caused by a girl, into some life long hereditary bipolar disease?
So basically what is being said is that had I never had that depression, i would have STILL ended up being bipolar?

And if a child’s parents both have it what are the chances the baby will develop?

I babysit a child whose mother is bipolar, which is highly hereditary I’ve been told. The child exhibits a lot of behaviours that make me wonder whether he also has this disorder. For example:
- laughing uncontrollably when being disciplined (i.e. timeout, or a talking-to)
- lots of “exclusive” behaviours, i.e. “we’re pals but so-and-so is stupid”

Now I heard of bipolar but we think my sister and nephew have it? Can anyone tell me if anyone has had experience with this or knows someone? We don’t know if we should take them to the dr? What should I look for? Is it hereditary?
